President Muhammadu Buhari Installs Gbong Gwom Jos as the 3rd Chancellor of Unizik.
The President of the Federal Rebublic of Nigeria General
Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR has installed the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman Plateau State
Council of Chiefs, Da Jacob Gyang Buba as the new Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe
University.
The President carried this out as part of activities marking the 10th
combined Convocation ceremonies of the institution. General Buhari who is the Visitor to
the University, was duly represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities
Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, OON.
The
President in his address said that the Federal Government is working hard to
address the challenges facing educational development in the country. He
expressed confidence in the ability of the University’s new Chancellor to
discharge his duties credibly. The
President challenged universities in Nigeria to be at the vanguard of research,
teaching and community service, so as to enhance the nation’s development in
all fields of human endeavours.
In response to the investiture,
the Chancellor appreciated the President of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria for honouring him with the appointment. He promised that he would use the
position as Chancellor of the University to mobilize the goodwill of various stakeholders
in order to support the management, staff and students of the University, to
advance and attain the goals and objectives of the Institution.
The
Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano in his welcome address,
congratulated the new Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and members of the University
Community for a successful investiture.
The Governor, represented by the Deputy
Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke commended the Vice-Chancellor for his efforts at
taking the University to greater heights. He expressed hope that the present
administration under the leadership of Prof. Ahaneku will promote academic
excellence as well as infrastructural development in the University.
The
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Eberendu Ahaneku, FAS while congratulating the
Chancellor on his appointment, pledged the loyalty and support of the entire
University. He expressed optimism that the wealth of knowledge and experience
of his majesty would be an invaluable asset to the University.
Highlight
of the ceremony was the conferment of Honorary Doctorate degree (Public
Administration) on the Chancellor and carnival parade in his honour.
Some
other dignitaries present at the ceremony include: the Obi of Onitsha, his Majesty
Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe who was the royal father of the day.
Eze Uzu
Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu members of the University governing council, clergy men,
Royal fathers, traditional Rulers and other dignitaries from all walks of life.
